Superyacht captain champions mental health resources for yacht crews

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Life on a yacht may seem luxurious, but the reality for crew members can be challenging.

Superyacht Captain Kelly Gordon, who grew up in a small town in north central Indiana, is working to improve conditions for those on deck.

"I actually grew up the furthest away from the yachting industry that you possibly could," Gordon told CBS12 News.

Her journey into the yachting world began after a friend invited her to a yacht party in North Carolina. "I will never forget this. I stepped one foot on the back deck, and I looked around and said, this is what I want to do," she recalled.

Gordon's path to becoming a captain was not without obstacles. Early in her career, she faced harassment from a mentor she admired.

"He said yes, I’ve seen you do all these things, yes, I will sign off on this assessment, but only if you let me grab your boobs," she recounted.
